With the Fall weather (yay!), I’ve been thinking about how to evaluate building energy performance with an eye toward strategically lowering energy costs.

DEGREE DAYS

Measuring a building’s energy performance is tricky for multiple reasons, not the the least of which is ambient conditions – the weather is always changing.

To mitigate the problem of changing ambient air temperatures, building scientists use degree days. Degree days are an imperfect, yet effective method for evaluating energy performance over time. Helpful resources for understanding degree days are the National Weather Service’s What Are Heating and Cooling Degree Days and BizEE Software’s Degree Days – An Introduction.
